This is a very good question and the answer is quite simple. Its all about experimentation. I don't pre-plan any of my designs, i just pick out different colours, styles and textures and put them together and see what the result is from that. Pre-planning is quite difficult which is why i don't do it, i also don't like pre-planning because then you get stuck on a particular way of doing things instead of just playing around. More ideas and designs are created that way. It is all about playing around and just being in that moment.
It is all about being yourself and just letting things happen. Don't try to copy someone else's style, it does not work. do what works for you and someone else's style will not work for you. That is just how the world works. I have always just done what i want to do. If people envy you for it well then that's their problem not yours.
As i have already said, it is all about experimentation. That is the key word here, play around, see how it turns out and work from there but the most important thing is never repeat the same pattern. Customise your work. The most fun you can have is by mixing things up. It will get the job done.
Have fun and play around. the only way you will know if somebody will like something is to put it together and show people. That is exactly what i have done and the results have taken a while to show but they are showing and that is the most important thing.
So remember, it is all about the experimentation
