Holidays with our loved ones

It is that time of the year again where everyone gathers together for the Christmas Holidays. Now as time has gone by, our loved ones has extended into our friends as well. So our loved ones become our friends and family.

On more than one occasion among my circle of friends and family, we have spent these holidays with our friends instead of family for various reasons. Either the family have been away or an arrangement just hadn't been made. That has also happened with my family before, especially when my mother had been fighting with her sister.

This year, we are having a small Christmas gathering of just me, my parents and my Gran. My brother is overseas but we will speak to him over the next few days. This is a time when we really come together to show appreciation for those that we have in our lives and it has become more of a time for appreciating the things that cannot be bought. I have noticed this quite alot over the last few years with my family. It has become more of a case of spending time together than really dishing out the gifts and material things.

The things that money cannot buy are the things that are most important because those are they memories that we will carry with us as we get older, that has become the case with me and my family and friends. Children will outgrow the toys and trinkets and will always be more likely to remember how much love they were showered with by the presence of their loved ones than anything else. As they get older they will learn to appreciate the little things.

Holidays are a time for spending with people and making memories, not getting the latest toys and gadgets for your kids to keep them quiet, that is how you get the spoilt, selfish little brats. Those are the things they will outgrow. I really wish the parents of the current generation would learn to understand that.

I was never the child that got whatever I wanted when I threw a tantrum for one reason, I had parents who showered us with so much love, attention and affection just by being in our lives that the material things and toys and gadgets didn't matter that much. Yes, now and then we did get nice things and got treated to really cool things and outings once in a while but we learnt to appreciate what we have. Their presence in our lives, then and now, mean the world to us even though we are older, we were raised the right way, to have respect and to respect and appreciate what we have.

Christmas is a time to give thanks for that and to remember that that day is to celebrate the birth of Christ, Christmas day has nothing to actually do with Santa Claus, he came long after. It has always been this way. It is the true meaning of Christmas.

I was raised on this and will continue to appreciate it and remember that. I love the holiday season, it is when we can really just get together and relax and enjoy some well deserved time off from the fast paced working world that we have all come to know.

Everyone could do with some time off even if it is a few weeks its better than nothing at all and some people find themselves in that position where they work right through. I take my hat off to them. When you do have time off like over these next few weeks make the most of it and make the memories that will last a lifetime, especially if you have young children, those are the times that they will really remember.

Take them to do things outdoors instead of plonking them on front of a TV watching the same movie or series that they have watched so many times over that you are pulling your hair out over it. Or even take them to see a movie, just get them out the house, socialise your children, they won't make friends if they are cooped up indoors.

I know that we live in a very trying time but the least you can do is make sure that your children have a healthy upbringing in which their minds are constantly stimulated with new and amazing things because to them, it will be even if you have done it a hundred times over, it is special to them and the holiday period is the perfect time to do this, even afterwards to do something with them.

When I was growing up over the holidays, I was not sitting in front of a TV or cooped up indoors, everyday, we did something that keep us busy and stimulated our minds and it kept us active and health. I even baked with my grandmother and we went to movies and the park and went for walks in the nature reserves and saw the animals and loved every minute of those times. Sometimes we would go to the coast for a few weeks but most of the time we did other things to keep busy.

Even now, these are the things that I will remember for the rest of my life.

What did you do or do you do during holiday times?

Let me know in the comments and let's share some stories.

Have a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year I hope 2020 will be all that you hope it to be.
